do you remember the sound of snow?

A little spring cleaning never hurt anyone, right?  Last weekend, we did the “cleaning” part – swept, swiffered, vacuumed, windexed, and scrubbed.  But, much more fun is the 1st swap of spring/summer clothes for the heavy sweaters and cords we’ve been wearing since October.

Around this time every year (and even more so when we’ve been lucky enough to have so much warm weather so early on), I go a little crazy buying new spring clothes – something about the bright colors, floral patterns, and open-toed shoes starts to get to me.  Since this usually happens well before I can actually start wearing these summery clothes [case in point: last April, I bought 2 pairs of LOFT shorts and couldn’t wear them until June], these purchases usually drive me to do my first clothes swap of the season.

The Half-Way-To-Summer Swap:
If you’re like me, your city-sized closets don’t allow you the benefit of having clothes for all 4 seasons out at one time and under-bed boxes are your best friend.  Even though it can be a pain to climb down there and stir up the dust bunnies, I highly recommend a half-way-to-summer clothes swap.

I start by assessing which items are really too winter-y to suit the type of weather I wish we had everyday in spring {this assessment should really be made once you’re safely in the 50’s temps, so you don’t risk a high of 42 degrees, when your sweaters are all packed up}.  My piles usually include anything wooly/itchy, heavy, or simply out of season, especially corduroys, plaids, and darkly-colored sweaters.

Once I know how much room I’ve now freed up in my closet, I pull out that dear friend, the under bed box, and try to reasonably assess which items could transition nicely into spring.  You’ll notice I left the nautical bathing suit cover-up and floral print dress for the full-on summer swap, which will happen at a later date.

Those spring/summer items I’ve pulled out get hung up or stacked below the remaining items in the closet.  And, as I wear the spring items more and more, they slowly migrate to the tops of piles until I realize I can do my full-on summer clothes swap! {Can’t wait!}

Not only does this Half-Way swap freshen up your closet, making some of your old items feel like new, it also makes room for some of those early-summer purchases you might not be able to wear quite yet {hence the recommendation to put them at the bottom of your stacks}.  Even better, it makes the full-blown summer swap a bit less daunting once temps hit the 70’s.
