Alternative Mantle Ideas

Around this time of year, I start feeling a very familiar tug on my heartstrings, wishing I had a fireplace. Sure, I’d love to make fires and cuddle up for warmth, but it’s really the decorating and styling options a mantle offers that I’m wishing for { #bloggerproblems }. Mantles are the perfect place to set up miniature holiday decorations { one of my favorite things! }, hang garlands and stockings, and generally festi-fy your home.

But what if you don’t have a mantle? For the ambitious among us, you could build your own faux fireplace and mantle – I’ve seen plenty of DIYs for that kind of thing { here, here, and here, just to name a few }. But, what if you want the benefits of a mantle without all that work?

Through the years of apartment dwelling, I became quite adept at decorating sans mantle. I’ve learned to use every other available surface in lieu of a formal fireplace. So I thought it’d be fun to take a look at all the different ways you can get some of that mantle styling fun even if you are mantle-less.

No Mantle? Try a long shelf instead // Bubbly Design CoOne of the easiest ways to indulge in mantle styling is to find an empty wall in your house and add a shelf. Voila – a mantle!

Deeper and wider shelves will have a similar effect to a mantle, especially if you place something low profile below it { a bench, baskets, etc. } versus a large piece of furniture. If you’re tight on space, a picture ledge can offer a lot of the same decorating options, you just have to keep things a bit narrower.

If you don’t have a fireplace, there’s another problem come Christmastime…

Where do you hang stockings? We typically just opt out of hanging stockings at home and settle for seeing them hung up at my parents’ house. But, there are so many unique ways for achieving that mantle feeling and allowing you to show off your festive stockings.

When all else fails, just dust off any flat surface in your home and get to decorating!

Ultimately, the reason I crave a mantle is so I can bring holiday decor into every nook and cranny of my home. All you really need to display your holiday decorations is a flat surface. Whether it’s a bookshelf, an entryway table, or even the top of a piano, don’t hesitate to transition some of your “functional” spaces into holiday wonderlands.

I promise it’ll be worth it!
