A Roller Disco Birthday

Happy August! It’s officially my birthday month and not surprisingly my absolute favorite month of the year. We typically celebrate with a nice dinner or maybe a short trip, but I decided that this year’s BIG birthday requires something a little extra special — a roller disco birthday party!

It all started almost 10 years ago with a little show called The Girls Next Door. Do I have any other Holly, Bridget, and Kendra fans out there {please tell me I’m not alone}? Those girls really knew how to throw a theme party and my favorite of the entire series was the 70’s Roller Disco party they held on the tennis court at the mansion. Ever since then I’ve been obsessed with the idea of recreating it, admittedly on a slightly smaller scale.

The Inspiration

Every decade has it’s charms, but the 70’s are especially intriguing, maybe because I didn’t get to experience them. From band tees to tube socks, oversized sunglasses and flares to flower crowns and fringe. There’s no shortage of inspiration, which has made it fun to pull all of the party details together.

One of the most important parts of the party are the costumes. Over the years I’ve learned that the one sure-fire way to get people to have a blast is to encourage {or require?} costumes. I think it’s the best way to get people out of their day-to-day routine, feeling relaxed and maybe a little goofy. A few pieces of my own costume are still coming together, but I can already tell you it’s gonna be good.

The Party Essentials

Even though I love a good theme, I don’t think that it needs to be carried into every last detail. So although the party will be set in a roller skating rink with plenty of 70’s garb to go around, I knew I wanted to add a modern twist to the decorations and party styling. Enter: pineapples!

This trendy fruit is a perfect nod to the summertime and a funky way to add a little youthful personality to the party. With a few hints of gold and some bright colors, all of a sudden this roller disco starts to look very 2016, am I right?
