We spent last weekend in Rochester, New York visiting my little sister and were so impressed with how lively, dynamic, and interesting the city was that I thought I’d share a little about our trip. Even though it’s a hike from many cities on the east coast, it’s worth adding to your travel list for a three-day weekend adventure!

As we all know, any great fall weekend includes some combination of apple picking, cider donuts, and pumpkins. I’m happy to say we accomplished all three during our visit. Plus, the weather fell in that beautiful in-between spot where it’s not quite cold enough for a coat but not warm enough for one layer — perfect poncho weather! I can’t tell you how much I love ponchos because it feels like you’re wrapped up in a blanket all day.

Rochester is broken up into a handful of unique neighborhoods connected by tree-lined streets and the Genesee River running down the middle. In a lot of ways, it reminded me of Denver. We started in NOTA where my sister took us to the Public Market on Saturday morning. Even with the threat of rain, it was a bustling, diverse market where you could easily do all of your grocery shopping for the week. We narrowed in on a stunning $8 flower arrangement, coffee from Java’s, and pastries from Flour City Bread Co.

The South Wedge neighborhood boasts some of the cutest small businesses and shops including a vintage home goods store, Abode, and a custom paper goods shop {swoon!}. In High Falls, we got to experience the local beer scene at the Genesee Brewing Company. The beers aren’t top-rated, but the views of the waterfall and the roof deck are worth the visit.

My sister also lives walking distance from the East End neighborhood where a handful of lively bars and restaurants stretch along a few short blocks. We checked out a few spots and the clear winner in my mind was The Daily Refresher and their Velveteen cocktail, a twist on the traditional elderflower/gin drink.
