It’s been awhile since I shared a random update on the goings on in life. I know I’ve had plenty to say about our biggest adventure this summer (here, here and here). But this blog is not meant to only be about babies or mom topics. So here’s a look at what else is going on.
Currently Reading: Not That I Could Tell from Book of the Month, which I’m still loving! If you’re into reading, I recommend giving it a shot (although I skipped the September selections as I have plenty to read in my queue right now).
Currently Watching: Queer Eye Season 2, GLOW and Younger, although I finished the latest season and was so sad we still have to wait for a resolution!
Currently Listening To: I haven’t had much time for podcasts, but am starting to sing songs for Hayden. Luckily he doesn’t mind that I can’t carry a tune to save my life. I pulled up this album that my parents used to listen to with us as kids and it’s so nostalgic for me!
Around the Web: A smattering of interesting articles
The search for meaning.
Take it from the Japanese. A new-to-me concept about finding life’s purpose, which is so much more meaningful than finding happiness. It’s a lot to aspire to, but an interesting mental exercise.
A truly great piece on the importance of self compassion. If you have 5 minutes, this is the one thing to read this month.
“Research shows that the No. 1 barrier to self-compassion is fear of being complacent and losing your edge, and all the research shows that’s not true. It’s just the opposite,” meaning that self-compassion can lead to greater achievement than self-criticism ever could.
Let’s NOT do the damn thing.
I’ve been a long-time fan of the Bachelor/Bachelorette. Can we still be friends? But, Becca’s season was a bit of a dud and I could not get into BiP this summer (Bachelor in Paradise, for those not in the know). And then… this might be the nail in the coffin for my Bachelor-watching days. Colton is the next Bachelor? No way. Sure he’s hunky and he’s drumming up lots of drama, but I just. can’t. do it.
Getting my hairs did.
Next weekend I’ll be a bridesmaid in one of my best friend’s weddings. So naturally, I’m spending my free time looking up all of the makeup and hairstyles for myself. I’d typically play it safe with something like this but might just try a bolder, wispy look. Thoughts?
On regular hair days, I’ll just be over here trying to figure out the very un-done curl/wave/beachy look.
Trendy? Sure. But who doesn’t want to be more at peace and more mindful? I’m bookmarking this article on how to instill mindfulness in children. I can even start today but putting the phone down more during nursing.
I’m also reading up a storm during maternity leave and just finished 10% Happier. It was interesting but much more of a life story / mini biography than expected.
Random mom topics.
I know, I promised to downplay the talk about mom/baby topics. But, a few people have shared this article with me and it’s worth resharing for anyone pregnant or new to mom life. I have a great network of mom friends, but they’re fairly spread out and not all of them remember newborn life. It’s great that they are a text away, but I’ve also found that you need that person who’s IN IT with you.
Also this. For anyone who is married with kids. Or married and thinking about having kids. I hope it doesn’t scare you too much to think of the marriage happiness “U” graph. But honestly, I just love when people talk openly about something that’s so darn difficult. We are not alone. Promise.
